Get Out Of A Rut
Who wants to learn a new word?
The word of the day is umvelt (oom-velt). It’s a great word. The concept of umvelt was developed when scientists understood that different animals in the same ecosystem recognize different signals in their environment. For example, humans see visible light while honeybees detect ultraviolet radiation and snakes sense infrared. Even though humans, honeybees and snakes are in the same environment and observing the same things, they each take in only a small range.
What’s important to understand is that our umwelt is not just physical, it includes how we think and feel. We create and shape it. It is everything that we recognize and interpret as our world. Because umwelt is made up of what we are aware of, we often accept our umwelt as complete and total. It is what it is.
When life is going well, your umwelt feels pretty good. Maybe it’s quiet and comfortable, maybe it’s vibrant and edgy. No matter what it looks like, it suits you and you don’t give it much of a thought.
But when you’re in a rut, it’s a different story...
I feel stuck.
I want something to change.
I don’t know what to do.
Your umvelt feels pretty small. Uncomfortable. Bland. Limited. It makes for a life where you feel trapped in a routine because you can’t see your way out. And then you despairingly wonder, is this all there is???
The answer: NO!
